Postpartum Recovery Timeline
0-6 Weeks After Delivery: Basic Recovery Period
- Focus on rest, with appropriate time getting out of bed and moving around
- Kegel exercises: can begin 3 days after delivery, do 3 sets daily, 10 reps per set
- Abdominal breathing: helps the uterus recover, do for 5 minutes daily
- Pay attention to wound care, avoid infection
6 Weeks to 3 Months After Delivery: The Golden Recovery Period
- After the doctor confirms good recovery, you can begin gentle exercise
- Postpartum yoga: helps the pelvic floor muscles and rectus abdominis recover
- Pelvic repair: professional pelvic belt or pelvic repair exercises
- Diet adjustment: control calories but do not diet, breastfeeding requires nutrition
3-6 Months After Delivery: Key Body-Shaping Period
- Increase aerobic exercise: brisk walking, swimming, postpartum fitness routines
- Rectus abdominis separation repair: do core training under a doctor’s guidance
- Balanced diet: ensure adequate protein intake, control sugar
The Importance of Pelvic Floor Muscle Repair
Pregnancy and childbirth can cause varying degrees of damage to the pelvic floor muscles. If not repaired promptly, it may lead to problems such as urine leakage and uterine prolapse.
Pelvic Floor Muscle Training Methods
- Kegel exercises: tighten the pelvic floor muscles and hold for 5 seconds, relax for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times as one set
- Glute bridge: lie on your back with knees bent, lift the hips, tighten the pelvic floor muscles
- Professional rehabilitation: after the 42-day checkup you can do pelvic floor rehabilitation treatment at the hospital
Rectus Abdominis Separation Repair
Most postpartum mothers have rectus abdominis separation. Never do sit-ups!
- Self-check method: lie on your back and lift your shoulders, use your fingers to measure the width of the indentation in the middle of the abdomen
- Separation within 2 fingers can recover on its own; separation beyond 2 fingers is recommended for professional rehabilitation
- Training methods: abdominal breathing, core stability training
Postpartum recovery requires patience, give yourself at least 6 months. Do not compare with others; every mother’s body recovers at its own pace.
