Complete Guide to Parent-Child Games (Ages 0-6): 10 Minutes of Quality Time Daily

Why are parent-child games important?

Parent-child games not only strengthen the parent-child relationship, but also boost your baby’s brain development, social skills, and creativity. Ten to fifteen minutes of quality time each day beats long stretches of absent-minded company.

0-1 year: Sensory exploration games

  • Peek-a-boo: cover your face with a cloth then reveal it, building the concept of object permanence
  • Shake the rattle: shake toys with different sounds to stimulate hearing development
  • Look in the mirror: hold your baby up to a mirror to help them recognize themselves
  • Texture bag: let your baby touch and feel fabrics of different textures

1-2 years: Gross-motor development games

  • Roll-the-ball game: sit face to face and roll a ball back and forth to build hand-eye coordination
  • Crawling tunnel: make a tunnel from a cardboard box to encourage crawling and exploration
  • Stack the blocks: pile up blocks then knock them down to understand cause and effect
  • Imitate animals: mimic how small animals walk and sound to exercise large muscles

2-3 years: Language and social games

  • Role play: pretend to cook or see a doctor to develop language and social skills
  • Find the object: name an item and have your child find it to expand vocabulary
  • Puzzles: large 2-4 piece puzzles to build observation skills
  • Finger rhymes: recite nursery rhymes while doing finger movements to promote fine motor skills

3-6 years: Thinking and creative games

  • Board games: matching games, Ludo, and the like to learn rules and taking turns
  • Crafts: paper cutting, collage, playdough to spark the imagination
  • Simple science experiments: separating water and oil, mixing colors, and so on
  • Outdoor adventures: treasure hunts in the park, observing insects, getting close to nature

The best toy is a parent’s company. Put down your phone and play with your child!
