What Does High Blood Sugar in Pregnancy Mean
Gestational diabetes (GDM) is high blood sugar first detected during pregnancy, usually found at the 24–28 week screening. Pregnancy hormones reduce insulin efficiency, and about 1 in 6 pregnant women is affected. Most recover after birth, but active management protects both mother and baby.
Step One After Diagnosis: Monitor
- Use a home glucose meter to check fasting and 1–2 hours after meals as advised.
- Common targets: fasting below 5.3 mmol/L, 1-hour post-meal below 7.8, 2-hour below 6.7 mmol/L (follow your doctor’s numbers).
- Log meals and readings to show at appointments.
Six Diet Principles
- Measured staples, mixed grains: about one fist of cooked grains per meal; swap white rice and flour for oats, brown rice, whole wheat.
- Veggies first, then protein, then carbs: this eating order lowers the post-meal spike.
- Small, frequent meals: 3 meals plus 2–3 snacks; avoid overeating at once.
- Limit fruit: 200–350 g daily, split up; choose berries, cherries, grapefruit, apple; skip juice and high-sugar fruit like lychee and longan.
- Quality protein matters: fish, poultry, eggs, soy; a palm-sized portion each meal.
- No sugary drinks or desserts: milk tea, cake, and honey all count as hidden sugar.
Sample Daily Menu
Breakfast: 1–2 slices whole-wheat toast + egg + unsweetened soy milk. Snack: a small handful of nuts. Lunch: one fist brown rice + steamed fish + two fists vegetables. Afternoon snack: half a bowl low-sugar fruit. Dinner: mixed-grain congee + chicken breast + cold salad. A bedtime unsweetened yogurt can prevent night lows.
Exercise and When Medication Is Needed
- A 20–30 minute walk after meals helps; aim for 150 minutes of gentle activity weekly.
- If diet and exercise do not hit targets in 1–2 weeks, your doctor may start insulin (safe for the baby); oral drugs only by prescription.
- For shakiness, sweating, or dizziness (low sugar), eat 15 g of fast carbs and recheck.
