What Is Sensory Integration Training?
Sensory integration training uses games and activities to promote the coordinated development of a baby’s vestibular, tactile, and proprioceptive sensory systems, which significantly affects attention, emotion management, and motor skills.
Sensory Games for 0-1 Year
- Passive Exercises: help the baby move their limbs to promote proprioceptive development
- Rocking Game: gently rock the baby to stimulate the vestibular sense
- Touching Different Textures: let the baby feel silk, towels, flannel, etc.
- Tummy Time: practice tummy time several times a day to build neck and back strength
Sensory Games for 1-2 Years
- Walk the Balance Beam: stick a strip of tape on the floor for the baby to walk along
- Sand and Water Play: play with sand and water for a rich tactile experience
- Crawling Tunnel: make a tunnel from a cardboard box to train spatial awareness
- Throwing and Catching: toss and catch a large ball to build hand-eye coordination
Sensory Games for 2-3 Years
- Jumping Through Hoops: draw circles on the ground for the baby to jump in and out
- Swinging: stimulates the vestibular sense and promotes balance
- Bead Stringing: builds fine motor skills and focus
- Imitating Animals: hop like a frog or crawl like a puppy to exercise large muscles
Sensory Games for 3-6 Years
- Bouncing a Ball: continuous bouncing builds hand-eye coordination and focus
- Jump Rope: builds body coordination and rhythm
- Balance Bike / Scooter: builds balance and lower-body strength
- Building Blocks: build following a plan to train spatial thinking
Weave sensory integration training into daily play, keep it up 3-4 times a week for 15-20 minutes each session, for the best results.
